Studying in Canada: Study Permits, PGWP & Pathways to PR
Canada is one of the world's top destinations for international students. A Canadian education can also be a stepping stone to permanent residence through programs like the Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Programs.
Study Permit Basics
A study permit allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada.
Requirements:
Student Direct Stream (SDS): Available for applicants from certain countries. Faster processing (20 days) if you provide an upfront medical exam, language test scores (IELTS 6.0+), and a GIC of $20,635.
Working While Studying
On-campus work: No separate work permit needed. No hour restrictions.
Off-campus work: Up to 20 hours per week during regular sessions, full-time during scheduled breaks. You need a valid study permit with work authorization.
Co-op or internship: If your program includes a mandatory work component, you'll need a co-op work permit in addition to your study permit.
Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
After graduating from an eligible Canadian DLI, you may qualify for an open work permit:
